Ceramic Factory Tour

Posted on 30 March 2019

Step inside the factory where our ceramics are made!

We took a trip to Stoke-on-Trent to visit the wonderful potters who bring Mister Berwyn's ceramics to life!

Our ceramics are proudly made in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, in one of the few remaining world famous Potteries. Our ceramics are made from sustainably sourced Cornish Clay. The factory we work with was founded in 1888 and is the only ceramic factory of its kind in the UK still making plates!

The factory uses a traditional slip cast method to make the ceramics. The skills used to create each piece have been passed down through the generations from one master potter to another. Moulds are made from plaster and filled by a potter with liquid clay.

The most surprising things you'll notice when you visit this bustling factory is how many of the pieces are still made by hand. Every handle is hand applied and all finishing touches, known as the bisque selection, are also done by hand.

Once the pieces have taken shape and have been through various glazes and firings they are ready to be decorated. The decoration process is just as vigorous and by the time a piece is complete it will have passed through 14 pairs of hands! The decoration is when each piece becomes something we hope you'll treasure and enjoy!
